Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré, (Born Strasbourg, 6 January 1832 – Died Paris, 23 January 1883), was a French painter and engraver. Illustrator with extraordinary skill, draftsman, and lithographer, he is best known for his illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy, but this work is only one of many he has illustrated. His engravings reflect a romantic style, combined with an epic, dramatic vision and great technical virtuosity. An extremely eclectic and versatile artist, Doré experimented with all techniques and formats – painting, watercolor, drawing, sculpture, engraving – and with various artistic genres, thus creating “gigantic paintings and more intimate canvases, brilliant and luminous watercolors, shaded ink drawings of great technical virtuosity, scratching pen drawings, engravings, eccentric illustrations and even baroque, extravagant, monumental, enigmatic sculptures…”.While possessing an artistic personality gifted with various aspects, Doré achieved the highest results as an illustrator (“I would illustrate everything!” he once said). Many of his works, for example, are populated by gypsies, acrobats, fortune-tellers and diviners: Doré had a far from hidden sympathy for these figures. He loved to give himself a playful and carefree image and he loved the world of festivals, fairs and masquerade evenings, which he often frequented disguised as Pierrot.
